The Value of Weakness

Hebrews 5:2 – “He can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness.”

How interesting it is that a significant qualification for the effectiveness and influence of a priest is a humble understanding and acceptance of their own weakness. Thus the servant of God is endowed with a humble gentleness and kindness when helping others with their weaknesses. Ironically, many spiritual leaders today spend a considerable amount of time excusing, or covering up their weaknesses, protecting themselves from exposure for fear of losing their effectiveness and influence! The fear is not unfounded. Perhaps if the people in our churches had a healthier view of weakness and confession, they would be more apt to accept it in their leaders.

We must always be humble and gentle with others’ weaknesses. We can help others develop a healthier view of weakness and confession by modeling acceptance of others’ weaknesses and modeling true vulnerability as well. Why don’t we believe that, “When I am weak, then am I strong”?
